2006-2007: Series Introduction Love Your Wives Christian Fatherhood Purity of Heart |
The world and the Church long for men of virtue, but what specific traits does modern man need to cultivate in order to become this kind of man? What set of norms does he adhere to and who establishes these standards - is it God, society or the man himself?
The minds of atheists and believers alike share a common goal: truth. What is truth? The ancients believed the highest questions one could ask were: What is my purpose? Why am I here? Where did I come from? How will it end? The age old search for truth continues... To the Christian, Christ is at the epicenter of his existence and not himself. True faith is acknowledging God as the architect of all creation, and the daily act of humble surrender to God’s will. Like Mary, the true believer says: “Not my will, but thy will be done.” In this first installment of The Virtuous Man, we focus on realistic ways to properly order our lives in relationship with God through faith and humility. In the land of the "Workaholic" and the "Super Size", the old saying “too much of a good thing is bad for you” seems to have lost its appeal. In this frantic world we find ourselves spending more time in the office than we do at home; racing to keep up with our kids’ itineraries; relying on the latest technology as a platform for our increasingly poor and unfulfilling recreation; and puzzling endlessly over our financial issues. It seems hard to concentrate on anything for more than a few moments. Life is out of balance.
This second installment in the series will help you restore harmony and balance in life. You will learn to exercise prudence and temperance to make good decisions in today's mixed-up world. Listen to PART 1 | Listen to PART 2
We live in one of the most prosperous nations in the world and have many things for which to be thankful. American culture has come to symbolize what is most up-to-date and modern and is imported by countries around the world. But the appeal of our culture is fraught with dangers, coming at us fast and furious and preaching the dogma of “instant gratification”, refusing us time to form deep convictions and forge true friendships. It takes steely resolve to stay the course. In this third installment, we examine perseverance and fortitude and how to better incorporate them into our lives. Listen to PART 1 | Listen to PART 2
We all cherish life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and when these rights are threatened, we justifiably take offense. But are we equally offended when our neighbor’s rights are threatened? When he has to flee his home and his country just to save his life and his family? When he is that bothersome man on the street corner asking for a few bucks or a hot meal? When life’s circumstances force him to take a job far below his dignity? When he’s that downtrodden man, ignored and feared by everybody? “Am I my brother’s keeper?” What would Jesus do? In our fourth installment of The Virtuous Man, we learn to give to God what is God’s and to our neighbor his due. Listen to PART 1 | Listen to PART 2
Wherein lie our deepest hopes and aspirations? Is it in fame, fortune, or success? As opposed to these more superficial desires, hope presents itself as the “sure and steadfast anchor of the soul”. It is the weapon that protects us in the struggle for salvation. (CCC 1820). In the Beatitudes, Christ’s teaching reveals the good and ultimate meaning of human acts: God is drawing us back to Himself! The Beatitudes respond to our natural desire for happiness. Saint Augustine said it best: “Our hearts are restless, O God, until they rest in thee.” In this final installment of The Virtuous Man, we learn how placing our trust in God is the best choice. If we rely on our own strength, we will surely fail. |
